Program

Abstract

Since its start in 2006 at the Internet Interdisciplinary Institute (IN3) of the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya, GenTIC has been at the forefront of exploring how gender dynamics are involved in the design and use of scientific and technological innovations, with a specific focus on ICT (Information and Communication Technology) and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). For almost twenty years, the research group has carried out basic research and applied activities in research areas such as: the gendered factors shaping young people’s motivations to choose ICT and STEM studies and occupations; the development of gender roles and stereotypes about scientific and technological fields during childhood and adolescence; co-design, analysis and evaluation of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion policies, particularly in the research and innovation system; digitalization and gender; and feminist research design and methods in the digital age. More recent research lines include the analysis of health challenges and care dynamics from a feminist intersectional approach, feminist decolonial approaches to European gender and science knowledge creation and policy, and the study of power relations and organisational change to prevent the perpetuation of discriminations.

In this seminar, the GenTIC team will present its recent research findings and share ongoing project activities with students, researchers, academics, and anyone interested in addressing gender inequalities to overcome existing barriers to equity and inclusion in the digital society. We will also discuss how to promote inclusive gender equity in the science and innovation system, as well as different theoretical and methodological approaches related to applying an intersectional and decolonial feminist perspective to end current inequalities and social structures of power and domination.
